Cynthia Berg

Cynthia Berg is a Santa Monica based artist best known for her range of sculpture extending from classical figurative bronze to whimsical characters. She works in clay, wax, wood, and paint and incorporates significant detail in her work.

Born in Seattle and raised in Los Angeles, Berg comes from a family of builders, artists, and inventors and subsequently considers her creativity to be an inherited gene. She experimented with a number of artistic mediums throughout her life including photography, neon design, illustrating children's stories, and musical performance.

In 1996 she received a complimentary class in fantasy sculpture with motion picture special effects artist, Jordu Schell. "Sculpture was the one medium in which I had no interest whatsoever but the class was a gift and I felt obligated to accept. Thankfully, I did because I felt as though I finally found a medium with limitless possibilities".

Berg continued her studies at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art, the Florence Academy of Figurative Art in Italy, Otis Art Institute, and studied with Robert Cunningham, David Simon, and Karen Cope.

Her influences are many and include her reverence for Master Sculptors Vigeland and Rodin; her avid interest in animation; and a lifelong exposure to the cultural diversity of Los Angeles.

"Technique is paramount but it's the story, the essence of a character, the deeper truth I want to convey. The suffering that brings grace, the joy that comes when we connect with others, the paradoxes of our human experience".

Berg's most recent work is a collection of architectural assemblage giving us a glimpse inside the meaning of Home and the artifacts that define us. Her Beanstock series is a collection of Human Beans characters exemplifying the simple things in life that bring us laughter.

Berg's work can be seen at the Belle Arte Gallery in Hollywood, the Jim Miller Gallery in Denver, Michael McGuire Gallery in Cape Cod, and the Jeanie Madsen Gallery in Santa Monica.
